President Aquino claims Scarborough Shoal as Philippine Territory

President Benigno Aquino III stood up regarding the issues on Scarborough Shoal being part of the Philippine territory after tensions occurred when a few Chinese fishing vessels entered the said part of the West Philippine Sea and halted by the Philippine Navy.

The Chinese Embassy said earlier that Scarborough Shoal is historically part of the Chinese territory, and their ancestors used to catch fish in that area. However, the President said that it was clear to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS that Scarborough Shoal is covered in the 200-miles exclusive economic zone.

According to PNoy, this problem should be resolved in a peaceful way so DFA called on Chinese Ambassador Ma Kequing to help concerning the issue. He believed that no one wants this issue to lead to hostility between the two neighboring countries, so he is hoping that this will be resolved peacefully.

“Nasa lugar ‘yong ginagawa natin dito, bakit kayo pumasok sa aming teritoryo diyan? Sagot po sa atin ng… eksakto, binaliktad lang, inaangkin ng China itong Scarborough Shoal, indisputable raw na teritoryong ito, at nagproprotesta din sa pagpasok natin diyan,” President Aquino said.
